You heard the pop, the ankle ballooned, and now everyone has advice. Here is the exact sequence we give our athletes in the first 48 hours after a lateral ankle sprain.

Protect, don’t panic

Avoid limping through it. A few days of relative rest with an elastic bandage or brace protects the healing ligament. Crutches for a day or two is smart, not weak — if you cannot take four steps, get assessed the same day.

Cool it, briefly

Ice for 10–15 minutes, a few times on day one, mainly for pain relief. After 48 hours, gentle warmth and movement usually help more. Skip the week-long icing marathons.

Elevate above the heart

Ankle on pillows while you rest, especially the first evening. Compression plus elevation clears swelling far faster than either alone.

Start tiny movements early

Within pain limits, trace the alphabet with your toes twice a day from day one. Early, gentle movement feeds the ligament the signals it needs to heal neatly.

Then get it tested

Most grade-one and two sprains need a phased loading plan — balance, strength, hops — not just time. Book in within the week and we will map your return to full training with real testing, not guesswork.
